2.41million pets left vulnerable by the cost of unplanned veterinary treatment
- Tesco Bank has today announced their support for National Pet Month, a nationwide campaign to celebrate pet ownership;
- To help customers protect their cats and dogs, Tesco Bank is offering all Tesco Clubcard holders 50% off Tesco Pet Insurance Accident and Injury cover in the first year when purchased by 2nd May 2017.1
New research by Tesco Bank has found that the owners of 2.41million UK cats and dogs2 would be unable to pay the average cost of an unplanned trip to the vet in the event of an accident or emergency. With the average emergency vet bill totalling £4933, four out of ten pet owners state that the worst thing about owning their cat or dog is worrying when they have an accident or are hurt.
However, despite this worry, the research reaffirmed that we are a nation of pet lovers, with 84% of owners stating that their pet is an integral part of their family, and the most common reasons for owning a pet is for the happiness they bring and their good company.
The new research comes as Tesco Bank announces their support for National Pet Month, a nationwide campaign to encourage responsible pet ownership, and raise awareness of the great benefits that living with a pet can bring your family.
David McCreadie, Managing Director of Tesco Bank, said; “We understand just how important our customers’ pets are to them, and that’s why we’re supporting this year’s National Pet Month. Over the coming months, we’ll help customers take better care of their pets by hosting a number of Pet Roadshows at Tesco stores across the UK4, which customers can come along to. These will offer people the chance to see vet-led demos on topics such as brushing your pet’s teeth and grooming.”
To help customers protect their cats and dogs and ease the financial worry about the cost of veterinary care in the event of an accident, Tesco Bank is offering all Tesco Clubcard holders 50% off Tesco Pet Insurance Accident and Injury cover in the first year when purchased by 2nd May 2017. The quoted price will include the discount, and Premier, Extra and Standard cover are excluded.
David McCreadie added; “By reducing the cost of this type of cover, Tesco Clubcard holders can have peace of mind that they have insurance in place should their much loved pet have an accident or injury.
"In fact, more than half5 of new customers with a Clubcard could pay less than £2.98 for a dog, and less than £1.91 for a cat, per month in the first year when they buy Accident & Injury Cover by 2nd May 2017. These prices include the 50% discount offer and bring the cost down to less than the price of a cup of coffee.”
The research also showed that just over half of the nation’s pets are uninsured, with the main reason for owners not insuring their pets being worry about the cost of insurance, but among some of the other reasons was confusion over what product to buy.
Marc Abraham, practicing veterinary surgeon and animal welfare campaigner, added; “Pets are a huge part of our nation’s homes, and an integral part of many families, and National Pet Month is both a celebration of the joy pets can bring, but also a reminder of our responsibility to look after them. Tesco Bank’s research found that one of the main benefits of having a pet in your household is the love and companionship that comes with it. However, it’s important that owners are prepared for what’s involved in looking after their pet, from brushing their teeth, to grooming and worming, right through to ensuring your pet can access adequate veterinary care when required.”
