Maya Angelou was one of the most extraordinary women of our age. The American poet and civil rights activist, who died last year, once said: “There is a world of difference between truth and facts. Facts can obscure truth.” It is safe to assume that she wasn’t aiming her insight at UK banking, but leadership within the sector should ponder its relevance.

I’m delighted and honoured to be nominated for “Corporate Straight Ally” of the year at the upcoming British LGBT Awards. It’s excellent that the hard work that Out at Tesco do to support our LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Intersex) colleagues has been recognised.

The UK banking landscape has undergone significant change in the last decade. A number of new banks have entered the market; others have been acquired or forced to divest branches after receiving state aid; while millions of customers have gone through a fundamental change in how they do their banking with the growth of digital and mobile banking. But despite these changes, the competitive forces within the UK banking sector are not driving better outcomes for customers.

As the Chief Executive of Tesco Bank, creating the right culture in the bank has been my priority since we assumed full control of the business four years ago. Ultimately it is the culture of a business that transcends all other influences on how its customers are treated.
