The Food Collection
The Food Collection is part of Tesco’s ongoing effort to encourage customers to donate long-life food to charity. The December 2016 collection contributed 3.4 million meals to people in need. Since we ran our first collection in 2012, we have collected over 46 million meals
Our two charity partners – The Trussell Trust and FareShare – support a wide range of people in the UK who find themselves in desperate need of support. There are many reasons why people find themselves in this situation, from receiving an unexpected bill when on a low income to being alone and struggling to fight an addiction
The food that’s collected goes to homeless hostels, refuges, older people’s lunch clubs, children’s breakfast clubs and other charities working with people in need. It will be combined with the fresh surplus food, such as meat and vegetables that we receive from the food industry. Most of this surplus is fresh so we need you to collect those long-life items to make a nutritionally balanced meal for someone.
All of the food helps to feed people in need in local communities. For many people in crisis a meal is just the first step in helping to get their lives back on track. Tesco also adds an extra 20% to all food donations in the form of a financial donation, meaning that several million pounds of support has been given to reach more people in need.
How you can help
It’s really easy to donate food in one of our stores. Simply visit a store and pick up any of the items on the shopping list, and leave it at the food collection point . Over 600 of our stores have permanent collection points, which means you can donate food all year round.
