£30k donation to help dementia sufferers in Edinburgh
An Edinburgh dementia charity has marked Dementia Action Week by launching a music therapy programme, following the donation of £30,000 from colleagues of Tesco Bank.
LifeCare is an Edinburgh based charity providing a range of expert care services for the elderly across the city. The charity offers care services to combat loneliness and support those with dementia and will use some of the funds, which were raised by staff at Tesco Bank in Edinburgh, to launch the ‘Playlist for Life’ service, which helps individuals to build a soundtrack of their life to help them cope with the effects of dementia on their everyday lives.
Research shows that music can have many benefits for people living with dementia. It can help reduce anxiety and depression, help maintain speech and language, enhances quality of life and end of life care. It has also been shown to have a positive impact on long-term carers.
Vicki Bradley, fundraising manager at LifeCare Edinburgh, said:
“We are thrilled that Tesco Bank has raised over £30,000 to support our work. It will go towards developing our Dance to Your Own Tune Music programme, support our care services and help fund vital training for our care staff.
"The money raised will also help establish the Play List for Life programme, as well as support our new Music Therapy and Music Adventures programmes which together offer our clients a wonderful array of musical activities to enhance their wellbeing.
“The support shown to our charity by Tesco Bank staff has been superb, and we look forward to developing the wonderful projects planned for this year”.
Dementia is one of the fastest-growing conditions in Scotland and is estimated to affect 850,000 people across the UK. By 2050 it is expected that over two million people will be living with the condition.
Rachel Ruxton, corporate social responsibility manager at Tesco Bank in Edinburgh, said:
“LifeCare is a charity close to the hearts of many of our colleagues, some of whom have first-hand experience of the impact that dementia can have on individuals, their families and communities.
“A year ago, our colleagues in Edinburgh chose to raise money for this very worthy cause. We are delighted that our donations will be used to launch the incredible Playlist for Life project, as well as allowing the charity to support more Edinburgh residents living with dementia. ”
Playlist for Life helps people use music to rekindle memories and promote connections with loved ones, as well as alleviate dementia symptoms such as stress and distress.
Established by BBC broadcaster Sally Magnusson in 2013, the initiative aims to improve the lives of people with dementia through the use of personally meaningful music, capable of stirring memories from the past.
It has already brought comfort and a connection between those with dementia and their families to more than 1,400 people living in Scotland.
Playlist for Life encourages families and people living with dementia to identify music from their past that can evoke memories – their ‘playlist for life’. They can then listen to their playlist with a family member or carer with two sets of headphones and a splitter cable, through speakers or even just singing together.
The total amount raised by Tesco Bank colleagues was £26,230. In addition, the Tesco Group donated 20% of the total raised - over £4,704.
