Funding boost for cancer charity ensures extension of vital therapies
Beatson Cancer Charity has received a welcome boost of over £45,000 for its work and research supporting people and families affected by cancer, allowing the charity to continue the extension of wellbeing services at health clinics across eight cancer treating hospitals in the West of Scotland, reaching more people affected by cancer than ever before.
The donation was made by staff from Tesco Bank Glasgow who have been raising money through a series of bake sales and sponsored events. The money will be used to help people who have been diagnosed with cancer by offering therapies at the charity’s wellbeing locations, which are designed to help patients better cope with their treatment. Therapies include massage, reiki, reflexology, hairdressing and wig fitting services.
Zoe McLaren is a complementary therapist at the charity and delivers some of these services to patients at The Beatson and other wellbeing locations.
For Zoe, being there to support and comfort patients and families affected by cancer is the most rewarding part of her job, and says that the kindness and generosity of Tesco Bank staff has made a real difference.
Zoe, who has been working at Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre since December 2015, said:
“The incredible support provided by Tesco Bank means that we can continue to support patients and their families through one of the most challenging times in their lives, be it one of our range of complementary therapies, a relaxing space away from the hospital ward or something as simple as a listening ear.
“What’s so great is that the patients see the immediate benefits of the donations. For example, someone may have had to stay in hospital unexpectedly but, thanks to the support from Tesco Bank, we can provide them with a care package including pyjamas and slippers. This is the same for patients from further away who may not have visitors.
“I would like to say thank you to Tesco Bank on behalf of all the patients and family members who have directly benefitted from your generosity and dedication. You really are making a real difference to what we do - from enhancing patient wellbeing, funding research and clinical excellence, to providing practical care and support; because of you, we can say to all those patients and families, ‘We’re with you’.”
The charity was chosen by staff in Glasgow as the charity of the year and fundraising activities have taken place over the course of the last 12 months.
Staff raised a total of £39,665, with the Tesco Group donating a 20% top up of £6,313.
In addition, Tesco Bank employees gifted items for Beatson patients attending one of the charity’s wellbeing locations, including welcome pack gifts which are essential for new arrivals, Samsung Galaxy tablets worth over £600 and Dyson products worth over £600, which patients can benefit from at the main wellbeing centre in The Beatson.
Lorraine Hannah, who helped to coordinate staff fundraising efforts at Tesco Bank in Glasgow, said:
“Cancer is an issue close to the hearts of many of our employees. Over the years we have seen the truly excellent care and support that Beatson Cancer Charity offers to its patients at possibly one of the most difficult times anyone can ever experience.
“We were thrilled to get started to raise as much money for them as possible and are delighted with the amount raised. We hope that it goes some way to alleviate the stress and worry that patients must experience.”
