Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools is Out of This World!

Today, (12th September), the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools 2017 launched in spectacular fashion at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh with children from Flora Stevenson Primary School in Edinburgh.

Rocket launch for Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools

The Competition, which is run by the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) and supported by Tesco Bank, attracts thousands of entries every year from children across Scotland. Entrants kick-start their own ideas by looking at some of the amazing works in the National Galleries’ collection, and there are a range of categories for children from nursery age all the way through to S3. Last year more than 7,500 children took part, and in total some 40,000 young artists have been inspired by the Competition.

Helping to celebrate today’s launch to, and highlighting this year’s ‘Transported’ theme for Primary 4-7, were pupils from Flora Stevenson Primary School. The pupils donned their space suits whilst staging their very own space shuttle lift-off in honour of the competition taking off!

The annual exhibition of winning entries at the NGS attracts praise from thousands of visitors from across the globe, and provides a much-deserved opportunity for some very talented young people to show their work in public.  In 2017, for the first time, the winners will see their work showcased at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in addition to receiving art materials, vouchers and workshops for their schools.

John Leighton, Director General of the National Galleries of Scotland, said:

“In our view there is nothing more important than encouraging the creativity and ambition of young people and the Tesco Bank Art Competition for Schools has been a fantastic way to unleash the talent of many thousands of children. The partnership between Tesco Bank and the National Galleries of Scotland over the last five years, has helped us open up our annual competition to children right across the country, and I am sure that the 2017 competition will help us reach even more budding young artists. We are very excited that next year the exhibition will be on show for the first time at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which is a wonderful and very popular venue for families.

We are also very proud that Linda McLelland, our Playfair Education Co-ordinator, who has masterminded every competition since it started, was this year awarded an MBE in recognition of her contribution to art education in Scotland.”

Adele Mills, Senior Community Investment Manager, Tesco Bank, added:

“The themes for our Competition are aimed at inspiring children and encouraging them to express themselves creatively – and this years’ are no different. Creating opportunities is important to us and we look forward to seeing how imaginative the children and their teachers can get.”
