A balanced world is a better world

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re speaking to colleagues who are actively involved in the conversation on how we promote a better gender balance at Tesco Bank. Today, Will Curley shares his thoughts on why he became involved in Women at Tesco, and how he’s supporting the #balanceforbetter campaign.

“A balanced world is a better world”. So much common sense in those seven words. Have you ever asked yourself why, if something makes so much sense, we don’t just make sure it happens?

Recently I attended a colleague network collaboration day and I asked our host for the day, former NBA player and psychologist John Amaechi, this exact question. He said that all change requires taking a great many people with you (undoubtedly, we all know this fact); that everyone has different motivations that need to be understood (again, something easy to agree on) and lastly, that the harder he pushes, the harder it is for him to be heard. This was the portion of the conversation that hit me hardest. As a person who is always pushing hard, this resonated with me most; it is something I do often. And John is right.

I joined the Women at Tesco network in 2017. I joined for the same reason a great many people join. A chance to be heard. A chance to make a difference to the status quo. The ability to help make our business better. What actually happened was more than I could have ever expected. I learned more about myself by being surrounded by some of the most passionate people I have ever met. I began to understand different views that, although I was aware of and perhaps naively thought I understood at some level, in a way that was deeper, more meaningful and resonated far more than I could have imagined.

But… I was still left with questions.

How do I make a difference? And how can I be heard? It’s an age-old question, and one that I struggle with all the time. With no agitation, objects remain still; too much agitation, objects will spill. And then it hit me. Why did I join the Women at Tesco? Why do I want to be involved? Diversity. Diversity. Diversity. Everyone has their own answer, each of them right in their own way. For John, it’s about being part of the solution that a global shift in attitudes requires. For me, it’s about supporting diversity of thought across our business and our wider industry. We need more people of diverse backgrounds, experiences and ways of working to help us find the best answers. If you can’t be yourself, then you can’t be effective. We need to make fewer assumptions and ask more questions. And we all have to be willing to make a difference if we want to live in a better balanced world.

Today is the 108th International Women’s day. An important day that offers us an opportunity to remember that you can make a difference. The campaign this year is “better the balance, better the world”. And although it might be International Women’s day, it’s a moment meant for all of us. Another chance to make a difference. Another opportunity to be heard. The campaign this year leaves us with some great things to consider:

  • What can you do throughout the year to help balance our world?
  • Remember, we are all in this together. Collectively we hold responsibility for creating a gender balanced world.
  • Motivate others. The small motivators are as important as the large gestures. You make the difference.
  • Only through reaching out and talking to one another will we gain a better understanding of each other’s motivations, passions and perspectives.
  • Take action

So, please take a moment on the 108th International Women’s Day to remember: a balanced world is a better world. Diversity is how we get to better answers. Balance is key to creating a better world with better outcomes. So let’s ensure we embrace common sense. If you are an agitator, a spiller, a politician, a diplomat (clearly not me), or a charmer; please use your skill to make a difference. The commitment I’m making today is to create a more balanced world so our business is better, my teammates feel welcomed, and my kids have to work less hard for balance.
