Together, we are creating a culture where everyone is welcome

17 May 2019 By Sandy Begbie

I am delighted to take on the role as new Executive Sponsor for Diversity & Inclusion (D&I), driving forward the great work that has already taken place in building and developing our D&I programme, and in supporting us to become a more inclusive Bank where everyone can feel welcome.

Having spent many years promoting the diversity and inclusion agenda within different businesses and also through my work with the third sector, I am passionate about making sure it is central to how we do business at Tesco Bank.

We value the different characteristics that every person brings to work each day and are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, that reflects the customers and communities we serve. Recently we have taken time to refine our Inclusion Strategy and agreed three key areas of focus;

  • Gender – Improving our gender balance across the Bank
  • Mental Health – Creating an environment where colleagues feel they can talk about how they’re feeling
  • Disability – Supporting colleagues and customers with a disability.

In support of this, I’m pleased to see how much the organisation has done throughout Mental Health Awareness Week. From signing the Time to Change pledge and publicly demonstrating our support for mental health awareness to seeing our Mental Health First Aiders talk to colleagues about what they do and how they can help. I have been struck by the openness, support and enthusiasm Tesco Bank colleagues have shown.

I was particularly delighted to see the charity Place2Be running sessions for colleagues on the mental health challenges that younger people experience. As a trustee with Place2Be nationally and the Chair in Scotland, I am aware of the fantastic work the organisation does to help improve the emotional wellbeing of young people across the UK. When I first started with Place2Be I was struck by one statistic - 50% of people who suffer mental health challenges later in life first experience them under the age of 14. I am really pleased that we could work together with Place2Be, providing colleagues with a greater understanding of how they can support their children to become more emotionally resilient.

I am really looking forward to the future at Tesco Bank and further progressing our ambition to be a truly inclusive organisation.
