Could an Apprenticeship be for you?

As National Apprenticeship Week 2019 draws to a close, we caught up with Jill Cooper, Colleague Experience Lead at Tesco Bank. Jill works on delivering our Apprenticeship Programme, as well as being the principal lead in managing and supporting colleagues through their Professional Qualifications.

“I’ve been supporting the Apprenticeship Programme since 2016 and I can honestly say I love my job. I am involved in recruiting new apprentices and then supporting these people through their two year Apprenticeship Programme.

The Apprenticeship Programme at Tesco Bank offers a really great opportunity for people to gain practical working experience alongside training, development and the chance to work towards a professional qualification.

So many people are brought up to think that university is the best or only option open to them, however, apprenticeship programmes, like the one we offer at Tesco Bank, can offer a great alternative.

Currently all of our apprentices join our customer service departments, putting them at the heart of what we do and represent as an organisation. Alongside gaining experience in delivering exceptional customer service, apprentices have dedicated time focused on their professional development. This can include things like presentation skills, interview skills and team building days.

After the two years, most of our apprentices choose to stay with us, with some applying for various roles in departments across the business. Lots of our past apprentices have continued to be involved with the Apprenticeship Programme, becoming mentors and supporting every new intake, which is really lovely to see.

Being involved in the Apprenticeship Programme really is such an honour, I love seeing the people we work with grow and develop, shaping their own futures and taking the first steps in their careers.

Apprenticeship Programmes are so important for business and Tesco Bank couldn’t be prouder to offer these opportunities. The enthusiasm, energy and drive for innovation that our aprentices bring to the organisation is incredibly powerful and really does impact both who we are as a business and what we strive to do – helping customers every day.”
